It's increasingly looking like manufacturers have worked out that to do well in that test the most important thing is to put wheels on the car that will collapse easily.

yup, it's good beacause I see this way too many times were if traffic slows down quick, people try to turn away at the last second

Is there any video/data for the CLS?

I didn't mean the cars are getting any safer, just that the manufacturers have worked out how to get better test results from them as they are.
In all the tests that resulted in really bad damage, it was because the rim stood up to the impact and got rammed back into the passenger compartment. No-one's stopped selling chunkier rims, they've just started sending cars for test on the spindliest ones they have.

That quarter panel wrinkle can't be good........ also, why hasn't anyone developed a square driver's airbag yet? Might prevent people sliding to the left in one of these collisions.

o ok yeah that's true. I remember when I worked for Lexus we had an issue with the IS300 when they first came out that the wheels would bent too easy. Lexus then started selling them with a 3 ply tire instead of 2. Soft eough for impact but too weak for a pot hole? not sure

hmm, adding that little extra piece on each side of the airbag just in case....
* runs to the patent office, sells idea, gets hella rich, gets everyone on OPPO manual and diesel swapped Panthers for a huge oppo crash derby *

I don't see it as the wheel deformed so much as the frame/suspension deformed. Either way, the Merc performed well.

I was a claims adjuster for 5 year. The really nasty ones are the drifter over the line two-lane versions of this.
Mercedes did an AMAZING job with this. Well done.

That wrinkle in the quarter panel is no harm. It's caused by the rocker moving backward relative to the roof and rear structure. The good news is that is energy not transfer to the passengers. The really important thing here is the rectangle of the door opening stayed true, leaving the space between the passenger and the dash/steering wheel its proper size and shape. Then the airbags can do their work.

Yes they did. It's crazy that this is only I think 45mph. So many have failed. 2012 C class failed before but now are good

Kinda shittin' in your thread here, EL, but here is an oldie but a moldy. They don't make em like they used to. Thank god.

oh I know. I've been turning wrenches for about 13 years, and yes, the whole "an old car/truck is safer because it was made of metal" is 1 trillion percent false. I currently work for Volvo, these tests are always awesome to study.
